Product Description:  An exceptionally rare and highly important Heer General M43 Field Cap, representing one of the most desirable forms of German wartime headgear and executed to a standard befitting a senior-ranking Army General officer. Tailor made from superior materials, the cap exemplifies the elegance and understated authority associated with high-ranking Heer field uniforms.

The exterior is fashioned from finely woven doeskin wool in an especially attractive light feldgrau shade, retaining a remarkably smooth and even surface nap throughout. The cap displays only a light and pleasing age patina, with no evidence of moth damage or other exterior imperfections, an extraordinary characteristic for a field-worn cap of this rarity and age. Metallic gold piping encircles the crown, denoting General officer rank, while the original gold-finished side buttons remain securely affixed by their original prongs.

Most notably, the cap retains its original insignia as always present. The Heer eagle is of the desirable early pattern, preserving rich highlights to its original gilt finish, while the cockade is of high-quality multi-piece metal construction, lending the piece exceptional visual depth and authenticity.

The interior is lined in dark teal rayon, beautifully preserved and free from damage. The gray leather sweatband remains fully intact with only minimal wear to the original finish. The celluloid sweat shield is no longer present, and no maker mark is visible, a characteristic not uncommon among bespoke privately tailored examples of this caliber.

Originally acquired from Wehrmacht Military, a respected source within the militaria collecting community, this superb Heer General M43 Field Cap stands as an elite and increasingly unobtainable artifact of German military history. With its outstanding preservation, unquestionable display appeal, and extreme rarity, it possesses all the qualities expected of a true centerpiece within an advanced headgear collection. Condition may confidently be described as Excellent ++.

Historical Description:  Model 1943 Field Caps: Prior to WWII, all branches of the German military issued their soldiers a field cap in the traditional “side cap” style (there were other types of field caps for certain specialized units). This type of field cap, called “little boat” (Schiffchen) by the troops, was found to be inadequate in the harsh extreme cold weather conditions on the Eastern Front in the brutal winter of 1941-42. As a result, in 1942, some units started issuing a type of field cap that had flaps and a button closure that could be folded down and fastened under the wearer’s chin, to provide protection to the ears. This type of cap, known as the M42, saw limited issue and was replaced a year later with a new model field cap, the Einheitsfeldmütze, that was intended to be issued to all branches. This final model of Wehrmacht field cap, which collectors have termed the M43, was based on the cap that had originally been issued to Wehrmacht mountain troops and featured the fold down ear flaps, as well as a visor. These caps were made out of wool and were intended for year-round wear in all regions where tropical uniforms were not issued. The caps were apparently very popular, as they very quickly replaced the earlier models on the heads of the troops in the field. By 1944 this was the most commonly seen field cap in combat units. These caps remained popular after the war, and many had their insignia removed and were worn out and discarded.
