Heer Dagger Portepee

Condition: Near Mint

Pattern: Heer

Product Description: This Heer Dagger Portepee is a really nice original example, perfect for completing a dagger rig. It’s a textbook pre-1945 piece in the German Army pattern, made from a woven aluminum wire over a thread core. There is no indication this Portepee was ever used or worn. The woven wire is pristine, completely intact, with no fraying, oxidation or other damage. The loop for a dagger handle is complete and full length. This Heer dagger portepee shows only the faintest hint of age, and would be ideal for display with a well-preserved dagger. These are not common in this condition. The condition rates as near mint.

Historical Description: German Dagger and Sword Knots and Portepees had been used on the blades of Prussians since the time of Frederich the Great. However, the original purpose of these were far from the decorative additions of today. During the time when blades were an individual’s primary means of defense, they were used to secure the weapon to the wielder’s wrist. Over time, they developed into the now recognizable dress accouterments of Germany’s dress daggers and swords. Using colors, length, and design, these accoutrements could tell a lot about the wearers branch, specialty, rank status, etc.
