Product Description: This Heer Cap Cockade Cutoff – BeVo is an exceptionally rare surviving example of German Army field cap insignia from the Second World War. These cockades were intended for wear on all models of German Army field caps and remain highly sought after by collectors today.

This example is of textbook BeVo machine-woven construction, featuring the red, white, and black national colors of the German Reich crisply executed on a thin green rayon backing. The weave is sharp and well-defined, characteristic of quality BeVo production.

The insignia has been machine stitched onto a retained section of the original cap fabric, which was cut away and preserved as a keepsake by a veteran. Such period “cut-offs” are especially desirable, as they represent authentic wartime-removed relics retained for personal remembrance.

Condition is excellent, with bright original coloration and only extremely slight age toning. The piece remains structurally sound and displays beautifully.

This cut-off originates from a substantial private collection assembled over more than three decades, encompassing a wide range of Second World War–era German insignia across all branches and types. The final photograph illustrates the broader grouping from which this example is offered. Additional uniform cut-off eagles from this same collection are presented in related lots.

Historical Description: Cockades originated in or before the 18th century, as purely ornamental bows or knots of ribbon, worn on cocked hats. Over time, these evolved. They took many other forms, and were used to show membership in organizations such as political parties or military units, or to show allegiance to a cause. The armies of France and Russia wore cockades on their shakos, during the Napoleonic Wars, and cockades were in use in the European revolutions of the 19th century. In Imperial Germany, most military headgear was adorned with two cockades, with one in the red, white and black colors of the German Reich, and the other in the colors of one of the states that made up the Reich. During the Weimar era, the use of the state cockades was abolished, and in the Third Reich, military caps were adorned with the Nazi eagle and swastika emblem as well as the red, white and black cockade, which was made in a wide variety of cloth and metal forms for different headgear types. Cockades in various colors remain in use to this day.
