Product Description: This German Whistle is a nice original item from the second World War. The whistle itself is carved from bone, and is the typical military pattern that could have been issued or purchased. It is complete, and shows only normal slight wear from handling and use. These whistles are extremely loud, as one might expect for something intended to be heard over the din of battle. The whistle is complete with an original lanyard, made of wartime type subdued gray braided rayon cord. The lanyard is woven onto the whistle and cannot be removed; it has undoubtedly been there since the war, and shows light, even soiling from use as well as age toning. The end of the lanyard is simply finished with two knots. This German Whistle is a sound example of a scarce item, perhaps once used to direct men on a battlefield. It is in excellent condition.
Historical Description: Besides the standard issue field equipment issued to nearly every Wehrmacht soldier, members of the German armed forces carried a vast array of different personal kit items. Some items, such as watches and compasses, were issue items, Reich property that was assigned to soldiers based on role and need. Many other types of items, including shaving kits, were things that soldiers had to buy, or bring or have sent from home. Special rations packaging was used for certain items, and some basic items like cleaning brushes and hand towels, and even soap, were actually part of the standard set of things issued to all soldiers. Wehrmacht soldiers carried books for entertainment, writing tools for staying in touch with home, and many types of hygiene items were available to help soldiers stay and clean and comfortable as was possible in field situations. The personal kit items used by German soldiers present an interesting sub-field of study, and give insight into what daily life was like for the men who fought in World War Two.
