Product Description: This is an outstanding example of a rare Fire SD/Schuma Sewn-in Shoulder Board, as worn by members of the collaborationist enlisted auxiliary police force operating under SS control in occupied Eastern territories during World War II. This single board is constructed from grey/green wool with a grey/green underlay, denoting its military-police function. It is trimmed with red piping—indicative of fire service—and features a finely executed, machine-embroidered red swastika at the center, the identifying insignia of Schuma fire personnel.
This is the sewn-in type, in Excellent++ condition, showing only the lightest signs of age and handling. The materials remain crisp, with strong color retention and no damage or fraying.
Formed in July 1941 and composed largely of Baltic volunteers, the Schuma was placed under the authority of the SD (Sicherheitsdienst) and Ordnungspolizei. These units supported German occupation forces in security operations, anti-partisan activity, and—in many documented cases—were involved in atrocities during the Holocaust. While technically under the Order Police, they operated as extensions of the SS security apparatus and were deeply integrated into the German policing structure in the East.
This SD/Schuma Slip-on Shoulder Board is a rare and historically significant example of collaborationist police insignia—seldom encountered, especially in this condition—and is an important piece for any advanced collection of SS, Eastern Front, or auxiliary police artifacts.
Historical Description: The Schutzmannschaft (or Schuma) was an auxiliary police force established by SS leader Heinrich Himmler on July 25, 1941, to support German occupation efforts in the Soviet Union and Baltic states. Although officially subordinated to the Ordnungspolizei (Order Police), the Schutzmannschaft operated under the broader authority of the SS and played a key role in enforcing Nazi control in the East.
These units worked closely with SS and security police forces, often participating in anti-partisan operations and population control. Many battalions were directly involved in the Holocaust, assisting the Einsatzgruppen with mass shootings, roundups, and deportations of Jews. In some instances, such as the Schutzmannschaft-Brigade Siegling, personnel from the SS and Security Police were integrated into the Schutzmannschaft and later absorbed into the Waffen-SS.
While formed as a policing entity, the Schutzmannschaft functioned as an arm of the SS security apparatus, contributing significantly to Nazi occupation policies and atrocities in Eastern Europe.
