Historical Description: The German Feldpost in World War II was the military postal service responsible for delivering mail to and from members of the Wehrmacht across all theaters of war. Operated jointly by the Reichspost and the Armed Forces High Command, it ensured communication between soldiers and their families, which was considered vital for morale. To maintain operational security, soldiers did not use geographic addresses; instead, each unit was assigned a Feldpostnummer, a coded number that identified the unit without revealing its location. This system allowed the postal service to route mail efficiently even as units moved rapidly across fronts.
As the war expanded, the Feldpost became one of the largest postal systems in the world, handling millions of letters and parcels daily. Special trains, trucks, aircraft, and front-line couriers were used to move the enormous volume of correspondence. Despite increasing logistical difficulties such as bombing, stretched supply lines, and chaotic retreats—the Feldpost continued to operate until the final days of the war. Its persistence highlights both the organizational complexity of the German military and the importance placed on maintaining personal contact between soldiers and home.
