Product Description: This is an exceptional and unquestionably choice example of the Model 1934 DLV Knife (Deutscher Luftfahrt-Verband Fliegermesser) produced by the prestigious firm SMF (Solinger Metallwarenfabrik Stoecker & Co.) of Solingen, representing by far the finest specimen of its type we have handled in recent memory. The blade retains a razor-sharp tip, perfect complete crossgraining and a rock-solid fit, with the deeply acid-etched “SMF Solingen” maker mark executed with superb clarity and rich, dark contrast, rating easily at near mint to mint condition. The original blue pebbled leather buffer pad remains perfect. The steel-based scabbard, clad in its original blue pebbled leather, is outstanding, showing a tight seam, 100% coverage, and only a few minute pressure marks in the leather from decades of careful handling. The solid nickel-silver scabbard fittings are excellent++, with the ball perfectly round and all four screws tight and undisturbed; the throat is crisply marked with the winged man, and the dagger/scabbard fit is textbook perfect. The hilt fittings, also solid nickel-silver, retain an impressive amount of their original lacquer, harmonizing beautifully with the scabbard fittings in tone and patina. The wood-based grip, wrapped in matching blue pebbled leather, remains in excellent++ condition, with the black enamel swastikas on the crossguard medallions absolutely flawless. The end of the crossguard bears the correct caster marking “K”. Completing the piece is its original hanger, with intact leather and a fully functional clip. An outstanding, investment-grade DLV Knife that would grace even the most advanced collection.
Historical Description: The Deutscher Luftsportverband (DLV) was an organization created by the NSDAP in March 1933. The “Sport” in the name helped to conceal the fact that the DLV were not really a sport organization, but rather was made up of units that conducted military flight training- specifically, the training of military pilots, contravening the Treaty of Versailles stipulation that Germany was not to have any air force. The head of the DLV was Hermann Göring, and Ernst Röhm was the deputy chief. The organization was formed from a number of pre-existing flight clubs. The various SA “Fliegersturm” units were disbanded, and their personnel rolled into the DLV, with an increased focus on military style flight training rather than air sports. The DLV was a uniformed organization, and wore uniforms similar to that of the SA, but with distinctive insignia and rank structure. In 1937, the DLV was disbanded; the successor organization was the Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps (NSFK).
