Product Description: This DLV Flyers Knife – SMF is a gorgeous piece, one of the very nicest I have ever owned. The blade is outstanding, with full original luster, and nearly all of the original crossgraining still present with the exception of typical runner marks from going in and out of the scabbard. The reverse of the blade is nicely etched with the manufacturer emblem of Stocker & Co. in Solingen (SMF). The original leather blade buffer is present. The handle is really nice, with nearly all of the original color and surface to the blue pebbled leather on the grip. The metal fittings on the handle are made of nickel silver, with a pleasant, even patina. The side of the crossguard is correctly marked with the letter “K.” The black enamel swastika shows no chips or damage. This DLV Flyers Knife – SMF is complete with its original scabbard, which has leather that is close to perfect, with only some tiny nicks. The nickel silver fittings are a good match to the handle. The scabbard is nice and straight, and bears the correct DLV winged propeller organizational emblem at the scabbard throat. The ball fitting at the tip is slightly dented, but all there. The suspension ring is intact, and still retains the original brown leather hanger. The hanger has typical early nickel silver fittings, including a functional spring clip, and is riveted in place, as is typical. This example is in a strong excellent condition, and would be very hard to upgrade.

Historical Description: The Deutscher Luftsportverband (DLV) was an organization created by the NSDAP in March 1933. The “Sport” in the name helped to conceal the fact that the DLV were not really a sport organization, but rather was made up of units that conducted military flight training- specifically, the training of military pilots, contravening the Treaty of Versailles stipulation that Germany was not to have any air force. The head of the DLV was Hermann Göring, and Ernst Röhm was the deputy chief. The organization was formed from a number of pre-existing flight clubs. The various SA “Fliegersturm” units were disbanded, and their personnel rolled into the DLV, with an increased focus on military style flight training rather than air sports. The DLV was a uniformed organization, and wore uniforms similar to that of the SA, but with distinctive insignia and rank structure. In 1937, the DLV was disbanded; the successor organization was the Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps (NSFK).
