Product Description: This DLV Flyers Knife is a nice, early piece, that shows honest traces of wear and age. The blade retains original crossgraining, with some runner marks and scattered spotting. The maker mark of F. A. Helbig is nicely etched on the ricasso. The buffer pad is present on the blade. On the handle, the grip is typical Helbig style with textured blue paint, instead of the leather wrapping used by other makers. The paint shows some wear and has some old display case fuzz on one side that we have not attempted to remove. The quality nickel plated guard and pommel show light, attractive patina. The swastikas on either side of the guard are the typical Helbig “speckled” style. The scabbard is also correct and typical for this maker, with a speckled blue painted body. Nearly all of the paint is intact. The drag and throat are early nickel plated examples, matching the handle. The throat is marked with the DLV organizational emblem. The suspension ring on the scabbard is missing. This DLV Flyers Knife is a great representative example of its type. The condition rates as very good.

Historical Description: The Deutscher Luftsportverband (DLV) was an organization created by the NSDAP in March 1933. The “Sport” in the name helped to conceal the fact that the DLV were not really a sport organization, but rather was made up of units that conducted military flight training- specifically, the training of military pilots, contravening the Treaty of Versailles stipulation that Germany was not to have any air force. The head of the DLV was Hermann Göring, and Ernst Röhm was the deputy chief. The organization was formed from a number of pre-existing flight clubs. The various SA “Fliegersturm” units were disbanded, and their personnel rolled into the DLV, with an increased focus on military style flight training rather than air sports. The DLV was a uniformed organization, and wore uniforms similar to that of the SA, but with distinctive insignia and rank structure. In 1937, the DLV was disbanded; the successor organization was the Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps (NSFK).
