Product Description:  A Death of Admiral Heihachiro Togo Table Medal, cast in bronze and issued in 1934 to commemorate the passing of Japan’s celebrated naval commander. Measuring 2¼ inches across, the medal presents a dignified portrait of Admiral Togo on the obverse, with a finely rendered depiction of his flagship Mikasa on the reverse. The piece retains strong detail throughout, showing an attractive, even patina.

Surface wear and light scratches are visible, consistent with age and handling, and a small hole has been added at the upper edge for suspension, as shown. Despite this alteration, the medal remains a desirable historical artifact with well-preserved artistry. A characteristic example of its commemorative type, this Death of Admiral Heihachiro Togo Table Medal offers collectors an appealing combination of condition, craftsmanship, and naval historical significance.

Historical Description:  Admiral Heihachirō Tōgō (1848–1934) is widely regarded as one of Japan’s greatest naval commanders and a central figure in the emergence of Japan as a modern maritime power. Born into a samurai family in Satsuma, he trained extensively in Europe during the transformative years of the Meiji period, studying naval science and observing firsthand the practices of the British Royal Navy. His early service included distinguished action during the First Sino-Japanese War, where he commanded vessels in several key engagements that demonstrated both tactical clarity and a keen understanding of modern naval warfare.

Tōgō’s international renown was cemented during the Russo-Japanese War, when as Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet he led Japan to decisive victory at the Battle of Tsushima in 1905—an engagement often cited as one of the most consequential naval battles in history. His defeat of the Russian Baltic Fleet reshaped the global balance of power and established Japan as a major naval force. Following the war, Tōgō continued to serve as an advisor to the Imperial Household and mentor to future naval leaders. His death in 1934 prompted widespread national commemoration, and objects produced in his honor, such as the Death of Admiral Heihachiro Togo Table Medal, remain significant relics of Japan’s early modern naval heritage.
