Product Description: This Cased Luftwaffe Radio Operator’s Badge is a really desirable gem. The badge is beautiful, with wonderful original finish. It’s a high quality, early piece, made of Tombak. The eagle retains about 98 percent of the original dark finish, and the silver electroplating on the wreath is about 99 percent intact, near perfect, with appealing and typical age toning and patina. On the reverse, this badge is maker marked behind the eagle with the stamped marking “C. E. Juncker, Berlin SW.” The hardware setup is correct for this maker, with a typical barrel hinge, round wire pin and “C” catch. The textbook Juncker rivets remain nice and tight, and the pin is functional, with original factory blackening intact. This outstanding badge is housed in its case of issue, which is a correct, high raised, Juncker style. The treated fabric covering to the case shows some light freckling and small marks, but retains bold original color, with nearly all of the original surface still intact. The gold leaf embossed award designation on the lid is fully intact, with original luster. The hinge and push button closure function flawlessly. The inside of the case is very clean, with a correct crushed velvet insert that displays the cross beautifully. The deep blue silk used to line the lid and cover the hinge inside shows no issues. This Cased Luftwaffe Radio Operator’s Badge is an extremely nice set. The condition rates as excellent plus.

Historical Description:

The Luftwaffe Radio Operators Badge (Bordfunkerabzeichen) was instituted by the head of the Luftwaffe, Hermann Goering, in 1935. It featured a German eagle clutching two lightning bolts, surrounded by a wreath with the German swastika at the bottom. The badge was awarded to all Luftwaffe radio operators at the conclusion of their training, upon issue of a certificate from a flight school authorizing them to serve as radio operators. In this sense, it was a trade badge of trained radio operators, rather than being an individual award for military achievement, though it could also be issued prior to the conclusion of training by personnel who flew operational missions. With the annexation of Austria, the Luftwaffe Radio Operators Badge was also issued to Austrian radio operators taken into the German armed forces.
