Product Description: This beautiful Cased Luft Flak Badge is the very desirable Juncker J2 type. The early, high quality badge shows only minor wear to the high points of the design on the obverse. The recesses retain lots of original darkening, that gives the badge a look of depth. The reverse of this Cased Luft Flak Badge has an intact and functional hardware setup, with the barrel hinge and round wire catch that one expects to see on the J2 Juncker badges. Under the pin, the badge is neatly marked with a “C. E. Juncker, Berlin S.W.” manufacturer stamp. The badge is still contained in its original case, which is in excellent condition. The embossed gold leaf “Flak-Kampf.-Abz.” designation on the lid is intact and nearly perfect. The deep blue covering of the case is almost perfect, with only a few very tiny scattered wear marks here and there. The metal hinge and push button work flawlessly. Inside the case, the badge rests on a gorgeous, deep blue velvet covered insert; the lid of the case is lined with blue silk. The overall condition of this Cased Luft Flak Badge is excellent. Juncker is one of the most desirable makers of these awards, with a reputation for outstanding quality, and this set embodies that.

Historical Description: The Luftwaffe Flak Badge was instituted on 10th January, 1941. The original design, an Eagle clutching a swatika flying above a raised 88mm gun emplacement and surrounded by an oakleave wreath, is credited to Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus, a famous German architect whose designs were favored by the German OKW and used for many other combat and qualification awards. The criteria for the awarding of the Luftwaffe Flak Badge was based upon a points system. Points were given for the downing of enemy aircraft and the assistance of the downing of aircraft by searchlight or spotting units. After accruing 16 points, the badge would be awarded. Both officers and enlisted personnel were eligible for the award.
