Product Description: We are proud to be able to offer this exceptionally desirable German Army swallowtail Regimental Standarte, complete with its original streamers. This is an exquisitely crafted and absolutely gorgeous work of art. The body of the flag is made from fine silk, in the beautiful and eye-catching red color of the Artillery branch. It’s double sided, with both sides featuring a large Iron Cross of black silk and wire bullion, on which is superimposed a large and absolutely stunning German national eagle and swastika emblem, surrounded by a finely worked wire bullion wreath. The level of detail in the hand stitched embroidered thread and bullion is incredible. Each corner of the flag, on both sides, is adorned by a stitched swastika emblem, in black and silver wire. This Regimental Standarte retains bright original colors, with only minor age toning- to be expected after the passage of 80 years. The overall condition remains excellent. There are a few issues to note, including some small holes and an area with some blotchy discoloration. The flag was carefully removed from a pole, leaving very small holes in the silk on the hoist end. There are a couple of tears at the hoist end, visible in the pictures, as well as a few scattered holes, approximately pinhead sized – nothing that detracts from the overall visual impact. The original fringe along the edges is complete, though the stitching has come loose in a couple of small areas. This Regimental Standarte is complete with its original streamers. The streamers are adorned with finely struck German national eagle emblems, with a silver finish, and the dates “16, März 1935” and “16. März 1936.” The tassels themselves are made of silver, red and black bullion and are complete with their original tassels. They are in great condition with some minor wear and one area of fraying. This is an extremely rare and desirable item that could be the centerpiece of a very advanced collection.

Historical Description: The “Standarte” was in important and iconic part of the regalia of German military, political and paramilitary units during the Third Reich. These were displayed at rallies and were used as marching standards by dedicated personnel who led units in marches and parades. German military units had various types of these flags including drum and trumpet banners, and standards for the Regiment and Battalion in both square and “swallow tail” variations. Each Standarte was a unique, hand-made work of art. They were made by highly skilled craftspeople and were held to an exceptional standard of quality. Generally, the background of the Standarte was in the unit’s Waffenfarbe, the specific color that indicated the unit’s branch of service. On this colored background, in intricate and highly detailed hand-made wire embroidery, would be heavily ornamented versions of German national emblems. The Standarte was further adorned with streamers that were specific to each organization. Few were manufactured, and fewer survive today; they are exceptionally sought-after relics of Third Reich pageantry.
