Product Description: An outstanding example of a WWII German SS Fez with Tassel, as worn by foreign volunteer troops of the Waffen-SS, including the “Handschar” and “Kama” Divisions. This fine wool fez remains in excellent overall condition, exhibiting only a few small areas of light thinning or mothing consistent with age. The original black tassel is fully intact and well-preserved.
While the SS insignia has been carefully removed, the original stitch traces remain clearly visible where the eagle and Totenkopf patches were once affixed—providing strong evidence of authentic wartime application. This SS Fez with Tassel represents a highly collectible and evocative example of Waffen-SS foreign volunteer headgear, notable for its preservation and provenance.
Historical Description: The SS Fez was a distinctive headgear worn by foreign volunteer troops serving in the Waffen-SS during World War II, particularly the 13th “Handschar” (1st Croatian) and 23rd “Kama” Mountain Divisions. Composed mainly of Bosnian Muslim and Croatian recruits, these units were formed between 1943 and 1944 as part of the SS effort to enlist non-German forces from the Balkans.
Produced in field-gray for service wear and red (maroon) for dress occasions, the fez incorporated traditional Balkan and Islamic cultural symbolism while featuring standard SS insignia—an embroidered eagle and Totenkopf (skull) emblem—stitched to the front. Typically made of wool with a leather or cloth sweatband and a tassel, the fez reflected both local identity and Waffen-SS uniform standards.
Today, the SS Fez stands as a rare and historically significant artifact, representing the complex intersection of ideology, culture, and military necessity within the Waffen-SS’s foreign volunteer program.
