Wool SS Armband

Product Description: This wool SS armband is an extremely nice example of a hard to find and desirable piece of SS regalia. This pattern of armband was worn by all ranks with dress and service uniforms. The body of the armband is made of a top quality red wool fabric. The wool retains strong original color and is the typical plain weave type that is most commonly seen, with an extremely fine surface nap. The front of the armband is adorned with a ribbed white roundel and multi-piece swastika made of ribbed fabric. All of the stitching is factory type machine straight stitch, and every aspect of this armband is textbook in terms of materials and construction. The white roundel shows only light age toning. The long edges of the armband have ribbed black tape running the length of the band, indicating SS issue. Inside, there is no SS tag. The bobbin stitching of the roundel can be seen inside, and the short edges are joined on the reverse as is typical for these. This wool SS armband has exceptional eye appeal. The condition rates as excellent.

Armbands were worn on military and civilian uniforms and also on civilian clothes, from suit jackets to work clothing. They were used to denote membership in organizations, to indicate a specific role or function of the bearer, and as insignia of rank. Many organizations would change the design of their armbands over time, which added to the variety produced. These were manufactured in countless variations, ranging from simple printed bands to elaborately hand-embroidered pieces of the highest quality. Some Nazi armbands were worn by all members of large organizations and were made by the millions. Others were intended for use at a specific time and place and were unique. Many types were made in very limited numbers. Some bore metal insignia or special identifiers that indicated the wearer’s rank, unit affiliation, or nationality. Armbands were sometimes but not always marked with ink stamps by the issuing authorities.
