Product Description: Keyword: This is a fantastic example of the extremely scarce and highly desirable 2nd Model Railway Dagger, produced by Carl Eickhorn. It is a textbook Eickhorn piece in every respect, and one that would be exceedingly difficult to upgrade.
The blade is exceptional, bordering on excellent plus condition, retaining nearly all of its original factory crossgraining. Only the faintest speckling is visible under close inspection. The reverse is beautifully etched with the classic Eickhorn squirrel trademark, which retains all of its original darkening.
The handle is equally striking. The glossy grip remains completely free of cracks or chips, while the plated aluminum fittings preserve virtually all of their original finish. The crossguard displays the well-known die flaw on the left wing, a textbook feature found on genuine Eickhorn examples.
Of particular note is the rare single-piece scabbard variant—an experimental form that omits the usual two-piece throat collar. This rare scabbard design is seldom encountered and makes the dagger especially desirable. The scabbard itself remains in excellent condition overall, showing only two small dings to the lower front panel, typical from period wear (such as exiting vehicles). Both suspension rings remain intact and undisturbed.
Overall, this dagger represents an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire a scarcely encountered scabbard variant of the 2nd Model Eickhorn Railway Dagger. Missing from most advanced collections, this piece combines textbook originality with excellent preservation and rarity.
Historical Description: The German railway protection organizations (Bahnschutz) were made up of railway police as well as railway employees tasked with serving as a security force. The men of the Bahnschutz wore special insignia and uniforms and were also authorized to carry a special dagger. Initially, these men used a dagger that was identical to the German Army style of the period, but with a black grip, instead of the light shade of the Army dagger grip. Most of these were manufactured by the firm of Robert Klaas. In 1937, a new model of Bahnschutz dagger was introduced, with a totally different and organization-specific design. This type, known to collectors as the second model, featured the same black colored grip, but with new, silvered aluminum handle fittings, with the winged wheel emblem of the Reichsbahn on the crossguard. The scabbard had a brushed plated finish that matched the handle fittings. Because the Bahnschutz was never a large organization, these daggers were made in small numbers, making them very rare and desirable to collectors.
