Product Description: This 2 Place Ribbon Bar is an interesting Third Reich piece, worn by a WWI combatant who later went on to a civil service position. The first ribbon here is for the Hindenburg Cross with Swords, the first award instituted by the Third Reich. The miniature crossed swords emblem is nicely detailed, with some patina. The other ribbon is a typical cornflower blue long service ribbon, with a device for the 25 year Faithful Service Cross, for civil service. The black paint in the swastika emblem on the miniature cross is intact, and much original silvering remains, with some fading and toning. Both of the ribbons show bright original color and are fairly clean, with only extremely minor soiling from wear. The reverse of this 2 Place Ribbon Bar once had a wool backing, of which only a few fibers remain. The original hand stitching that holds the ribbons in place is intact, and the pin assembly is functional, with a sheet metal catch. This is a ribbon bar that would be perfect for a civil, political or paramilitary uniform, and also displays well on its own. The condition is very good.

Historical Description: The German Military had a long tradition of issuing awards for achievements ranging from long service and participation in specific campaigns, to battlefield valor. Some types of awards were to be pinned on the uniform, while others were medals that were suspended from ribbons. On the field uniform, only the ribbons for these medals were to be worn. But for dress uniforms used for parade and walking-out purposes, soldiers wore all of their medals in the form of medal bars that would be pinned to the uniform, on the soldier’s chest. Each medal bar was individually custom made by a tailor or a manufacturer of insignia. They were not issue items, they had to be purchased. These ranged from single mounted awards, to long racks of medals indicating a distinguished career of many years, sometimes with medals from both World Wars and even earlier awards of Imperial Germany. German medal bars were also worn on dress uniforms of civil, political, and paramilitary organizations.
