We purchased this along with some other items out of Nashville Tennessee from an estate broker. They purchased these items from the family of a Latvian gentleman who emigrated to the United States in the late 1940’s and passed away some years ago. They came across these items while cleaning out his house.

Historical Description: During the First World War, Bavaria, as part of the German Empire, issued a range of medals and commemorative decorations to recognize military service, valor, and participation in specific campaigns. Bavarian medals from this period were typically produced in materials such as bronze, silver, or aluminum, and often featured enamel detailing, heraldic motifs, and inscriptions denoting the unit, campaign, or event being commemorated. Many awards, including those for corps maneuvers and training exercises, served both to honor individual achievement and to reinforce loyalty to the kingdom and its military traditions. These decorations were worn with suspension ribbons, the colors of which often indicated the specific order or medal class.

In addition to purely military distinctions, Bavarian medals frequently reflected the ceremonial and social aspects of service. Commemorative pieces, such as those marking annual corps maneuvers, were intended to celebrate unit cohesion, esprit de corps, and the broader culture of military preparedness. Today, these medals provide valuable insight into Bavarian military history, design aesthetics, and the ways in which symbolic honors were used to foster pride, discipline, and recognition among soldiers during the tumultuous years of World War I.
