HJ Armband with Insignia

Product Description: This HJ Armband with Insignia is a really neat piece. Lots of items like this were put together by GI veterans, to display their souvenirs. Over the years, most of them were taken apart and separated, but this one has remained together. The armband itself is a textbook original, with a Bevo band and diamond shaped Hitler Youth swastika emblem. It’s clean, and appears to be unworn, though there is a very small, match head sized hole on the reverse. The colors of the armband remain bright. The armband has been adorned with an interesting mix of original insignia. The highlight is a nice NSDAP party membership pin, with perfect enamel. There is a set of cap and breast eagles for a veterans’ organization, and an aluminum wreath and cockade from a German Army visor cap. There are also two styles of membership pins from the German national labor union, the DAF- a stick pin type, and a pin and catch version. Lastly, there is a 1942 Day of the German Police donation “tinnie” from the winter relief organization. All of this insignia is nice and clean, and most of the pieces show little or no wear. The various prongs and pin attachments for all of the metal parts remain complete. This HJ Armband with insignia is sort of a mini-collection all by itself. It makes for an eye-catching display, and is in excellent condition.

Historical Description: Nearly every military, civil, political and paramilitary organization in existence during the Third Reich used armbands. Armbands were worn on military and civilian uniforms and also on civilian clothes, from suit jackets to work clothing. They were used to denote membership in organizations, to indicate a specific role or function of the bearer, and as insignia of rank. Many organizations would change the design of their armbands over time, which added to the variety produced. These were manufactured in countless variations, ranging from simple printed bands to elaborately hand-embroidered pieces of the highest quality. Some Nazi armbands were worn by all members of large organizations and were made by the millions. Others were intended for use at a specific time and place and were unique. Many types were made in very limited numbers. Some bore metal insignia or special identifiers that indicated the wearer’s rank, unit affiliation, or nationality. Armbands were sometimes but not always marked with ink stamps by the issuing authorities.
