Product Description: An exceptionally rare and visually arresting 27″ German Railway Eagle, executed in cast aluminum alloy and retaining the unmistakable character of authentic wartime service. Of imposing scale and remarkable sculptural presence, this highly sought-after Third Reich railway emblem displays the bold, sweeping wingspan and commanding aesthetic prized by advanced WWII militaria collectors.

The obverse retains the majority of its original finish, now aged to a rich, untouched patina with deep toning settled naturally into the recessed details. The surface remains entirely uncleaned and unrestored, preserving the coveted “as found” appearance that serious collectors increasingly value. Subtle wear and weathering throughout further enhance its unmistakable period authenticity and display appeal.

The reverse is prominently marked HE. G AL Mg Si and additionally stamped LOK RZA4 BLN, confirming period manufacture and railway usage. All four original mounting posts have been removed, with the two wing mounts creating visible openings where the eagle was forcibly detached, likely by a returning U.S. veteran. The reverse surfaces exhibit matching age-consistent oxidation and honest service patina throughout.

Combining exceptional scale, untouched originality, and undeniable wartime character, this 27″ German Railway Eagle represents an increasingly scarce opportunity to acquire a museum-worthy example of iconic WWII German railway insignia with extraordinary display presence.

Historical Description: During the Third Reich, all rail transport was nationalized and organized under the German Reichsbahn. Reichsbahn rail cars were state property and included everything from the locomotives used for transporting freight, to passenger cars, street cars and trolleys. In the Nazi era, and during WWII, the Reichsbahn adorned their locomotives and passenger rail cars with large metal decorative German eagle and swastika national emblems. These were made in various sizes and had a variety of finishes to suit different purposes and vehicle types. Generally, these eagles were manufactured from aluminum or zinc alloy, with integral threaded studs on the reverse that were used to affix these to the fronts of rail cars. These eagles had a striking and imposing appearance and were an iconic part of Nazi regalia. After the war, Allied denazification policies required these to be removed. Many were destroyed, though these were eagerly sought after by Allied troops hunting for souvenirs. They are extremely collectible and desirable artifacts today.
