Product Description: An exceptional and highly desirable RAD EM Hewer – Carl Eickhorn, representing a nice surviving example of this iconic Third Reich labor service sidearm sought after by advanced WWII collectors. Produced by the legendary Solingen maker Carl Eickhorn, this early-pattern hewer displays all the hallmarks of quality and authenticity associated with premier German edged weapons of the period.

The impressive full-length blade remains in excellent condition, retaining a bright finish with only light wear, scattered spotting, and honest runner marks consistent with careful preservation. The deeply etched “Arbeit Adelt” motto remains crisp and boldly defined, while the reverse is equally striking, bearing the beautifully executed “RADJ” emblem, “Ges. Gesch.” design protection mark, and the renowned early Eickhorn squirrel trademark, all sharply struck and perfectly legible. Such clarity of marking significantly enhances the desirability of this RAD EM Hewer – Carl Eickhorn among discerning collectors of WWII German militaria.

The stag grip plates are particularly attractive, exhibiting rich brown and golden tan coloration with excellent natural texture, tight fitment, and no cracks or damage. Heavy nickel-plated fittings retain the majority of their original finish, now toned to an even, pleasing patina that complements the age and character of the piece. Importantly, all retaining screws to the fittings remain present, further underscoring the completeness and integrity of the dagger. The cross guard displays some minor scratching and honest wear consistent with age and careful handling.

Equally impressive, the scabbard retains approximately 95% of its original high-gloss black enamel finish, displaying only minor handling wear and small imperfections acquired over decades of careful existence. The plated mounts exhibit matching patina throughout, creating a cohesive and highly displayable presentation. A small dent and light scratching to the scabbard tip are noted only for accuracy and do little to diminish the exceptional visual appeal of the piece. The leather hanger shows minor separation at the attachment point to the loop but remains intact.

Combining outstanding blade condition, beautifully preserved stag grips, sharply defined maker markings, complete original fittings, and an original scabbard with substantial enamel retention, this distinguished RAD hewer represents an increasingly scarce opportunity to acquire a premier example of a classic WWII German edged weapon from one of Solingen’s most celebrated makers.

Historical Description: The German National Labor Service (Reichsarbeitsdienst, or RAD) was a major Nazi Party organization before and during WWII. It provided a labor force for Nazi civil, economic and military projects. Service in this organization was compulsory; men aged 18 to 25 had to serve six months in the RAD, though those who volunteered for certain military duties were exempt. There was also a female RAD section, with compulsory service for young women during WWII. The Reichsarbeitsdienst was originally formed in 1934, from an amalgamation of previous voluntary labor organizations. Before the war, they dug ditches, cleared forests, reclaimed waste lands and built roads, including a role in building the famous German Autobahn system. In the leadup to war, they assisted with harvests and also built bunkers and field fortifications including the West Wall. During WWII the RAD was classified as an auxiliary organization to the Wehrmacht. The organization took on an increasingly military role, with RAD personnel serving on all fronts, and even in combat. The RAD had a vast array of distinctive uniforms, from finely tailored officer garments for formal wear to coveralls and work clothing. Insignia and headgear in many patterns was issued and used in the organization’s 11-year history, and special awards were instituted to recognize RAD service. In addition to the iconic spades used by RAD members, many other types of field equipment were also issued and used.
