Product Description: Government Official Dagger – Alcoso, is an attractive and increasingly collectible example of a Third Reich diplomatic and governmental edged weapon, displaying pleasing, even age patina throughout. The overall toning of the hilt, fittings, and scabbard matches well, giving the piece a cohesive and untouched appearance highly regarded by advanced WWII collectors.
The faux mother-of-pearl celluloid grip plates remain free from cracks or chipping and exhibit an appealing aged golden tone with particularly attractive swirling patterning. The grips fit tightly to the frame, with accumulated patina within the recesses further suggesting long-term originality and undisturbed assembly. The eagle pommel displays expected wear to the high points, while the forestrap shows areas of pitting that were polished in the past but remain visible upon close examination. The pommel spanner nut is marred and may be a replacement, being aluminum rather than the brass example typically encountered.
The crossguard of this Government Official Dagger – Alcoso is the correct pattern associated with the maker and exhibits honest wear to the raised details consistent with age and handling. The blade has been cleaned and polished, showing scattered gray spotting and areas of underlying pitting throughout. Despite this, the dagger retains strong overall presentation and remains an appealing display example for the WWII German militaria enthusiast.
The scabbard retains both original throat screws, one showing a small ding. The exterior presents with attractive, even wear and matching patina, complemented by the expected small loop rings typical to this model dagger. Notably free from dents, the scabbard displays particularly pleasing surface character and consistency with the hilt.
Overall, a solid and visually attractive Government Official Dagger – Alcoso, offering desirable period character, matching patina, and strong display appeal for collectors of WWII German daggers and political edged weapons.
Historical Description: German Diplomatic and Government Officials daggers are among the rarest and most sought-after of all of the production daggers of the Third Reich. These were elegant pieces, made in the highest quality, befitting the high status of the diplomats and officials who carried them. Both the Diplomatic and Government Officials daggers featured silver handle fittings with artificial mother-of-pearl grip plates, and an art-deco style eagle’s head pommel. The Government Officials dagger was produced in greater quantity than the Diplomatic pattern. The easiest way to tell the difference between these two very similar patterns of dagger is the way the eagle head faces on the cross guard. If the eagle faces to the left it is a Government Officials dagger and to the right it is a Diplomatic Officials. Most extant examples are made by Alcoso, who may have been the only authorized maker, though some examples with different maker marks are known. Surviving examples of the Diplomatic and Government Officials Daggers are very desirable among collectors.
