Product Description: This Kriegsmarine U-Boat Badge is a worn, early piece, with a great look and unique character. There is no manufacturer marking, but it was made by the firm of Otto Schickle in Pforzheim, a less commonly seen maker of this badge. This badge is struck from Tombak, a heavy brass alloy associated with early and high quality badges. The front retains about 50 percent of the original gilding. The bare Tombak has taken on a mellow patina with age, that contrasts beautifully with the bright gilding that remains in the recesses. Plenty of nice original detail remains. The reverse of this desirable U-Boat Badge is flat, with some built up dark patina. The hardware setup features a block hinge and sheet metal catch, both still held in place with the original solder. The wide in is functional, with no issues. This is a nice, solid U-Boat Badge, that remains in excellent condition.
Historical Description: The U-Boat Badge (U-Boots-Kriegsabzeichen) was instituted on October 13, 1939 by Kriegsmarine leader Grossadmiral Erich Raeder, to recognize the combat achievements of the extremely dangerous and all-volunteer U-Boat service. The design of the badge features a German submarine surrounded by a wreath, surmounted by a German national eagle and swastika emblem. The original design for the badge, submitted by Kriegsmarine sailors, was refined by Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus. To earn this badge, submarine sailors had to participate in a minimum of two missions against the enemy. If a sailor was wounded on a single mission, he could receive the U-Boat Badge. The badge could be worn both on and off duty. A total of 9,536 U-Boat Badges were awarded during WWII.
