Product Description: A rare and highly cohesive WWI USMC 2nd Battalion 5th Marine Grouping, presented as an all-original, as-found ensemble exhibiting outstanding uniformity, preservation, and unmistakable period integrity.

The service coat, measuring approximately 27 inches in overall length, 17 inches across the chest (pit-to-pit), and 24 inches sleeve length, is constructed of olive drab wool and remains in exceptional condition, notably free from mothing or significant fabric loss. There is minor, period-consistent separation to the interior armpit lining, with no structural compromise. The tunic is precisely configured with a 2nd Battalion 5th Marines shoulder patch, correctly applied service chevrons to the lower sleeve, and a suspended marksman qualification badge mounted above the breast pocket. The standing collar retains its original, matched USMC disc insignia, both exhibiting excellent detail and finish. Interior inspection confirms the presence of original USMC issue and sizing stamps to both coat and trousers, further reinforcing authenticity.

The accompanying trousers, measuring approximately a 30-inch waist with a 27-inch inseam, are of matching material and tone, displaying only minor, period field repairs visible upon close examination. The fabric remains strong, with no significant deterioration, maintaining excellent display and structural integrity.

The helmet represents a particularly scarce and visually striking component, featuring a hand-renderedThe US Army’s 2nd Infantry Division (“Indianhead”). Native American-style and of course the correct  Eagle, Globe, and Anchor Insignia. The artistry and patination are entirely consistent with period application. The interior is stamped “ZC193,” and retains remnants of the original chinstrap, lending further credence to its untouched, wartime configuration.

Also included is a Model 1906 bayonet, clearly marked “US 4417” and “SA 1906,” retaining its full-length blade with strong edge and profile. It is housed in its correct canvas and leather scabbard, both remaining in excellent condition with tight stitching and sound structure. Completing the ensemble is an early eagle globe and anchor snap cartridge belt, well-preserved and fully functional, exhibiting only expected age-related wear.

Taken as a whole, this grouping represents a scarce and technically correct Marine Corps field ensemble from the Great War, distinguished by its completeness, matching components, and exceptional state of preservation. A seldom encountered offering of this caliber, ideal for the advanced collector seeking a rare, investment-grade WWI USMC grouping with significant display and historical appeal.

Historical Description: The US Marine Corps 5th Marine Regiment, 2nd Battalion earned a distinguished reputation during World War I as part of the 2nd Infantry Division. Deployed to France in 1917, the 5th Marine Regiment quickly became a key combat force within the American Expeditionary Forces. The 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines played a central role in frontline operations, most notably at the Battle of Belleau Wood, where Marine units helped halt the German advance toward Paris. Their fierce fighting in this engagement contributed to the enduring “Devil Dogs” reputation for determination and battlefield effectiveness.

Following Belleau Wood, the battalion continued to distinguish itself in major campaigns, including the Aisne-Marne Offensive, the Battle of Saint-Mihiel, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. For its valor, the regiment received the Croix de Guerre and the right to wear the French fourragère, honors that underscore its significant contribution to the Allied victory.
