Product Description:  A compelling example of an HJ Hitler Youth Knife – Voos, presenting with the desirable early blade form featuring the characteristic ricasso notch and retaining traces of the etched motto “Blut und Ehre” (“Blood and Honor”), now softly worn yet still discernible. The reverse of the blade bears a bold maker’s mark for Emil Voos, adding to its historical interest. The blade exhibits areas of corrosion and evident age-related wear, consistent with period use, and is lacking its original leather buffer.

The grip displays well overall, with the obverse retaining an intact Hitler Youth enamel insignia, free from cracks though showing minor chipping that does not significantly detract from its display appeal. The black crosshatched grip plates remain strong on the obverse, while the reverse shows a central puncture loss and rivets exhibit verdigris. The pommel and fittings show oxidation and wear in keeping with the piece’s age.

The scabbard retains its original form but presents with notable paint loss and surface corrosion. The accompanying leather hanger remains intact, complete with its original functioning snap; the leather is supple, though showing areas of color loss and surface cracking.

An evocative and honest example, reflecting both its period of manufacture and subsequent history of use.

Historical Description: The Hitler Youth Knife (Hitlerjugend Fahrtenmesser) was introduced in the summer of 1933, shortly after the Nazi seizure of power in Germany. It was produced by a multitude of manufacturers and could be purchased from authorized shops for a price of 4 Reichsmarks. It was used not only as a dress sidearm, but as a functional camping tool, and these were commonly sharpened by their original owners. The earliest examples bore the motto of the Hitler Youth, “Blut und Ehre!” (Blood and Honor), etched on the blade. The blades on these early knives were marked with commercial manufacturer logos. They had nickel silver handles, and anodized metal scabbards. The use of the etched motto was discontinued in August 1938. Later HJ knives had nickel plated steel handles, painted scabbards, and the maker logos were replaced with an RZM code along with the year of manufacture. There are also transitional types that still have the etched motto but have dates on the blade ricasso. Manufacture of these knives is believed to have ceased around 1942. All HJ knives have the diamond emblem of the Hitler Youth on the handle.
