Historical Description: Imperial German regimental steins were commemorative beer mugs presented to soldiers at the end of their service in the Kaiser’s army, primarily between 1871 and 1918. These pieces celebrated regimental pride and personal service, making them both sentimental keepsakes and patriotic symbols.

Crafted from porcelain or stoneware, the steins were richly decorated with hand-painted scenes of military life, patriotic emblems, and inscriptions naming the soldier, unit, and service dates. Pewter lids often featured ornate finials—such as soldiers or artillery shells—and some included lithophanes depicting farewells between soldiers and loved ones.

Beyond their beauty, regimental steins reflected the camaraderie, loyalty, and pride of Imperial Germany’s armed forces. Today, they are highly sought after by collectors for their craftsmanship, individuality, and insight into the culture of the pre–World War I German military.
