Product Description: This Heer (Army) Dagger Portepee is an original example with a unique gold interweave at the stem, perfect for completing a dagger rig. Typical German Army pattern, made from a woven aluminum wire over a thread core. Portepee was attached to dagger at some point. The woven wire shows some fraying at the slide and heavier wear to the middle of the loop. The loop for a dagger handle is complete and full length. This Heer dagger portepee shows heavier wear, but would be ideal for display with a similar dagger. The condition rates as very good.
Historical Description: German Dagger and Sword Knots and Portepees had been used on the blades of Prussians since the time of Frederich the Great. However, the original purpose of these were far from the decorative additions of today. During the time when blades were an individual’s primary means of defense, they were used to secure the weapon to the wielder’s wrist. Over time, they developed into the now recognizable dress accouterments of Germany’s dress daggers and swords. Using colors, length, and design, these accoutrements could tell a lot about the wearers branch, specialty, rank status, etc.
