Historical Description: During World War II, Germany still relied heavily on mounted troops, which led to several badges recognizing horsemanship and cavalry skill. The most prominent was the German Horseman’s Badge (Deutsches Reiterabzeichen), originally introduced in 1930 and awarded in Bronze, Silver, and Gold for increasing levels of riding proficiency, horse care, and instruction. Its design featured a rider jumping a horse within an oak-leaf wreath. Another related award was the SA Sports Badge, issued by the Sturmabteilung, which included optional equestrian tests as part of broader physical fitness requirements. Though not exclusively military, both badges were commonly worn by Wehrmacht cavalrymen.
Beyond formal badges, mounted soldiers were identified through traditional insignia such as cavalry collar tabs, shoulder boards, and symbols like crossed lances, while many also received general military decorations like the Iron Cross and War Merit Cross. Germany also employed large numbers of horses—over two million—for transport and operations, particularly on the Eastern Front, and incorporated cavalry units from Eastern Europe, such as Cossacks, who wore distinctive ethnic insignia alongside German awards. Today, these badges are viewed as historical artifacts and are often subject to legal or cultural restrictions due to their association with the Nazi regime.
