Historical Description: The Degtyaryov DP‑28 light machine gun was the standard squad automatic weapon of the Soviet Red Army during the Second World War and one of the most recognizable Soviet infantry arms of the era. Adopted in 1928 and chambered in 7.62×54mmR, the DP‑28 was designed for simplicity, durability, and ease of mass production. Its distinctive top‑mounted 47‑round pan magazine gave the weapon a low profile when firing prone and became its defining visual feature. Air‑cooled and gas‑operated, the DP‑28 proved reliable under extreme conditions, from the mud of spring thaws to the bitter cold of the Eastern Front.

Throughout World War II, the DP‑28 provided essential automatic fire support to Soviet infantry units, playing a critical role in both defensive and offensive operations. It was widely used during major engagements such as the Battle of Moscow, Stalingrad, and the advance into Eastern Europe. While its rate of fire and magazine capacity were modest compared to some contemporaries, its rugged construction and ease of maintenance made it well suited to the Red Army’s wartime doctrine. The DP‑28 remained in service well after the war and influenced later Soviet machine gun designs, securing its place as a cornerstone of Soviet small‑arms history.
