Historical Description:  The Maschinenpistole 40 (MP40) is one of the most iconic firearms of the Second World War and a defining weapon of the German Wehrmacht. Developed by Heinrich Vollmer and introduced in 1940 as a refinement of the MP38, it was manufactured primarily by Erma Werke and Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum and firing from an open bolt in fully automatic mode, the MP40 featured extensive use of stamped steel components, allowing for efficient mass production. Its folding metal stock and manageable rate of fire made it especially suited to mechanized infantry, paratroopers, and armored vehicle crews.

Widely issued across all branches of the German armed forces and deployed on every front, the MP40 gained a reputation for controllability and solid handling, though its 32-round magazine was sensitive to dirt and rough use. Frequently sought after by Allied troops as a battlefield trophy, the MP40’s distinctive silhouette and innovative construction left a lasting impact on later submachine gun designs.
