Product Description: Imperial German Infantry ID Disc, attributed to Wilhelm Kilzer. An early, non-perforated Imperial-era identification disc, recovered from the ground and exhibiting expected age-related wear. The disc shows notable surface pitting and metal loss consistent with prolonged burial, with corrosion partially obscuring some stamped details on both obverse and reverse.
The primary inscription remains legible and reads “Wilhelm Kilzer – Ers. Batln 6. Garde. Inf. Regt.”, identifying the replacement battalion of the 6th Guards Infantry Regiment. Additional stamps are present but are interrupted by corrosion, attesting to the disc’s authenticity and field history. A well-preserved excavated example of an early pattern Imperial German Infantry ID Disc, offering strong historical character and appeal to collectors of First World War German militaria.
Historical Description: German ID discs were issued to all Wehrmacht personnel during World War II as a means of identifying soldiers in the field. These tags included critical information such as the soldier’s name, unit, and blood type, enabling efficient record-keeping and notification in the event of death or injury. The design allowed for one half of the tag to remain with the body while the other half was collected for administrative purposes. This practice became a key part of military protocol during the war and highlights the emphasis on organization and identification within the German armed forces.
