Product Description: A rare and visually compelling RAD Schellenbaum Flag, complete with its original pole mount and tassels, and offered in excellent overall condition for this seldom-encountered ceremonial form. Flag retains the original horizontal mount which shows some denting and wear to the end cones as shown. The separate tassel retains the original hook, but the spring closure is missing. Flag measures approximately 11 by 11 inches, and is distinguished by its richly worked silver bullion tape and fringe, which remain intact around the majority of the perimeter.
The central field features an embroidered swastika surrounding the RAD insignia, a striking and highly uncommon decorative treatment. The lower corners are embroidered with the numerals 180 and 181, enhancing the flag’s ceremonial and unit-specific character. As expected with a textile of this nature and age, there is visible moth wear throughout, with areas of loose or missing fringe and some loss to the embroidery, all consistent with period use and storage.
Despite these condition issues, the flag retains strong visual presence and displays attractively, with its essential elements intact. A scarce and evocative example of RAD ceremonial regalia, this RAD Schellenbaum Flag represents an appealing acquisition for the advanced collector of Third Reich-era flags and parade accoutrements.

Historical Description: The German infatuation with parades and marching is well known and goes back many years. Upon the Assumption of Power, the Nazis, aware of the psychological boost that these traditions provided, brought them back to the forefront, capitalizing on the power of the parade as a source of pride for the community. It made for an overwhelming experience to see uniformed soldiers, the SA or SS, or proud Party members marching in unison with a band thru the streets. The shellenbaum, or ‘jingling johnny’ as it was casually called, is a percussion instrument consisting of a long pole with numerous bells connected to one end, and using crescent shaped crosspieces has traditionally been used for military bands and parades. In the Third Reich, the bands used banners attached to the schellenbaum to identify the unit or division it was attached to.
