Product Description: An exceptionally appealing Japanese NCO Sword Type 95 Army – 1st Pattern Copper Handle Shin-Guntō, offered here as a particularly fine early example of this increasingly sought-after Japanese military sword. Featuring the scarce first-pattern solid copper handle, this piece rates excellent ++ condition and will immediately attract the attention of advanced collectors. The blade remains bright and lustrous, free from nicks or flaws, and displays only the most minimal age-appropriate wear, reflecting careful handling and preservation.

The original copper handle is correctly marked on the copper fuchi to the Suya Sword Shop, produced for the Tokyo First Arsenal during the period of Tokyo First manufacture under Kokura administrative control. The handle exhibits a rich, even patina that is especially pleasing, while the original brass tsuba remains fully intact. The locking pin is present and fully functional, a desirable feature often absent on lesser examples. As typically encountered with authentic early swords, the original leather saru-te is absent.  Overall length of the sword is 37.5″, blade length is 26.5″, and scabbard length is 29″.

The blade and scabbard are matching and bear the serial number 2567, a significant collector enhancement. The scabbard retains the majority of its original olive drab finish, with scattered areas of expected age wear and loss, and is correctly completed with the proper brass tip plug. Combining early-pattern rarity, strong originality, and excellent overall condition, this Japanese NCO Sword Type 95 Army – 1st Pattern Copper Handle Shin-Guntō represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a premium example of a classic Imperial Japanese Army sword.

Historical Description: It has been suggested that the Japanese military made more use of swords in WWII than the armed forces of any other nation. Officers in WWII and the pre-war years were required to have them. For many Japanese soldiers and officers, the sword was a connection to traditional samurai mythology. Some of the swords carried by Japanese soldiers, sailors and airmen were ancestral heirlooms, some of them hundreds of years old, often in new, military mounts. Others bought or were issued swords made specifically for Imperial Japanese Army or Navy use. Some of the military swords used traditionally made blades, while others used production shortcuts that arose from the need to produce the massive quantities of swords required by the growing military. There were many variants of swords used by the Japanese military in WWII, including the old style Army sword- the kyū guntō- and several models of the shin-guntō, which was made between 1935 and 1945. Swords used by the Japanese military in WWII, including the ancestral Samurai blades, the traditionally made military blades, and even the most inferior quality late war machine made pieces, are all collectible today for their historical value.
