Product Description: A Cased Bavarian War Merit Cross 3rd Class, presented in exceptional condition and retaining nearly all of its original finish. The medal displays strong detail throughout, with only two small areas of corrosion visible on the reverse, noted as the sole flaws. The suspension ring bears what appears to be the “WO” maker’s mark. Housed in its original case, the piece includes an unused, neatly folded ribbon fitted into the upper compartment, exactly as issued.
The case itself shows only minor handling wear, consistent with careful long-term storage. Overall, this Cased Bavarian War Merit Cross 3rd Class represents a particularly well-preserved example of Bavarian wartime decoration, desirable for its completeness, condition, and identifiable maker attribution.
Historical Description: Imperial German medals encompass a wide range of decorations issued by the German Empire between 1871 and 1918, reflecting the military, civic, and dynastic traditions of the Kaiserreich. These awards were bestowed for acts of bravery, long service, campaign participation, and distinguished contributions to the state. Their designs typically incorporated heraldic elements such as the Prussian eagle, imperial crowns, or portraits of reigning monarchs, often struck in bronze, silver, or silvered alloys depending on grade and purpose. Many were produced by respected medal manufacturers throughout the empire, resulting in pieces known for their craftsmanship, sharp die work, and detailed iconography.
During the First World War, Imperial German medals became both a practical means of recognizing service and a powerful symbol of national identity. Decorations issued during this period often carried inscriptions or dates related to the war effort, and many continued to be treasured by veterans long after the empire dissolved in 1918. Today, surviving examples are valued by collectors for their historical significance, artistry, and connection to the social and military structure of Imperial Germany, with condition, maker marks, and provenance contributing significantly to their desirability.
