Historical Description: The Heer officer’s dagger emerged as a distinctive piece of regalia after the rearmament of Germany in 1935, when the newly established Wehrmacht sought to create modern symbols of authority. Prior to this period, Army officers traditionally carried swords, but the introduction of the dress dagger marked a shift toward a more uniform, contemporary appearance. The design featured a straight steel blade, a metal scabbard with raised decorative bands, and a crossguard bearing a stylized Army eagle clutching a swastika. Its ribbed celluloid grip—most commonly off-white but also seen in orange, yellow, or darker tones—varied by manufacturer rather than by rank or branch.
While the basic form remained consistent, subtle differences in hilts, plating, and scabbard details appeared among the many firms producing these daggers, some choosing to mark their blades while others supplied unmarked examples. Worn with the dress uniform, the Heer dagger functioned primarily as a symbol of status and ceremonial presence rather than as a weapon. By war’s end, materials and craftsmanship showed expected wartime decline, yet the dagger remained an established emblem of Army officership and now offers valuable insight into the visual and material culture of the German Army during the era.
