Product Description: A finely preserved Imperial Imperial Gross Hessian 168th Infantry Regiment Named Beer Stein, named to Reservist Gefreiter Lamp, 5th Company, 5th Grand Hessian Infantry Regiment No. 168, Offenbach, covering the service period 1900–1902. Of .5 liter capacity, this example is crafted in porcelain and hand-painted in vibrant colors, depicting detailed scenes of regimental life—field exercises, barracks scenes, and patriotic motifs of the German Empire. The reverse features a meticulously painted unit roster, listing comrades from Lamp’s company, a charming and personal touch typical of these commemorative service pieces.
The pewter lid is surmounted by a drinking soldier finial, with a lion-form thumb lift, both retaining their original shape and detail. The lid and fittings remain in excellent condition, showing only the lightest traces of age. The stein itself is in excellent++ condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs, and retains its bright glaze and color throughout.
This Imperial Gross Hessian Infantry Regiment Named Beer Stein is an exceptionally fine example of a Hessian infantry regimental stein, notable for its artistry, vivid preservation, and strong provenance to a named soldier. Such pieces offer both historical and aesthetic appeal, reflecting the pride and tradition of service in the Imperial German Army at the dawn of the twentieth century.
Historical Description: Imperial German regimental steins were commemorative beer mugs presented to soldiers at the end of their service in the Kaiser’s army, primarily between 1871 and 1918. These pieces celebrated regimental pride and personal service, making them both sentimental keepsakes and patriotic symbols.
Crafted from porcelain or stoneware, the steins were richly decorated with hand-painted scenes of military life, patriotic emblems, and inscriptions naming the soldier, unit, and service dates. Pewter lids often featured ornate finials—such as soldiers or artillery shells—and some included lithophanes depicting farewells between soldiers and loved ones.
Beyond their beauty, regimental steins reflected the camaraderie, loyalty, and pride of Imperial Germany’s armed forces. Today, they are highly sought after by collectors for their craftsmanship, individuality, and insight into the culture of the pre–World War I German military.
