Product Description:
Hungarian BeVo Volunteer Sleeve Shield for the Wehrmacht (Ärmelschild für Ungarische Freiwillige). A rare and desirable flat-woven volunteer sleeve shield as issued to Hungarian nationals serving in the German Wehrmacht during the Second World War. Executed in the distinctive BeVo weave style, this example features the national colors of Hungary on a field-grey rayon backing, typical of wartime production standards. Maker-marked “BeVo-Wuppertal” to the reverse, confirming manufacture by the noted wartime insignia producer. This shield was intended for wear on the left upper sleeve of the uniform and remains in excellent++ condition, showing only minor storage folds that could be easily pressed out. A fine and authentic example, highly sought after by collectors of foreign volunteer insignia and BeVo-woven militaria.
Historical Description: During the Second World War, Hungary was a key Axis ally of Nazi Germany, and thousands of Hungarian nationals volunteered or were recruited to serve in various branches of the German armed forces, including the Wehrmacht. To distinguish these foreign volunteers, the German military issued a range of national sleeve shields, each representing the wearer’s country of origin. The Hungarian volunteer shield featured the national tricolor—red, white, and green—woven in a horizontal banded pattern. These shields were typically produced using the BeVo (Bandfabrik Ewald Vorsteher) weaving technique, a high-quality flat weave that allowed for mass production with detailed results. Sewn onto the left sleeve of the uniform, these insignia served both as a mark of national identity and as a tool for organization within the increasingly multinational composition of the Wehrmacht.
