Product Description: Sultan’s Medal for Egypt, 1801 – 4th Class with Original Ribbon. A rare and historically significant Sultan’s Medal for Egypt, 4th Class, awarded by Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II to commemorate the joint Ottoman-British victory over Napoleonic forces in Egypt in 1801. Struck in gold, this 4th Class example was typically awarded to enlisted men and non-commissioned officers for their service in this pivotal campaign. This piece is presented with its original ribbon, an increasingly scarce and desirable feature. The medal displays fine detail with light, even toning consistent with age. Ottoman Turkish script and the Sultan’s tughra (imperial cipher) are clearly visible on the obverse, with historically significant inscriptions. Ribbon shows thinning and wear from age, but still displays nicely. A fine example of one of the earliest Ottoman campaign medals, notable for being awarded to both Ottoman and British troops, marking early international military cooperation in the 19th century. Highly collectible and rarely seen complete with its original suspension ribbon.
Historical Description: The Sultan’s Medal for Egypt, 4th Class, was awarded by Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II to commemorate the joint Ottoman-British campaign that expelled Napoleon’s forces from Egypt in 1801. Struck in gold, the 4th Class was typically awarded to junior officers in recognition of their service in this pivotal campaign. The medal features the Sultan’s tughra (imperial monogram) and inscriptions in Ottoman Turkish, reflecting the empire’s authority and appreciation. As one of the earliest Ottoman campaign medals issued to both Ottoman and foreign (especially British) personnel, it represents an important moment in early 19th-century international military collaboration and the Ottoman Empire’s emerging practice of formal military honors.
