Product Description: This HJ Hitler Youth Armband is a textbook original example of the standard issue worn by members of the Hitlerjugend organization. The front features the distinctive diamond-shaped swastika emblem of the HJ, rendered in the typical Bevo machine-woven style and factory affixed to the body of the armband with precise straight machine stitching. The body itself is also Bevo machine-woven, constructed from a lightweight red fabric with a woven white central stripe. The long edges are neatly finished with machine-woven borders, while the short ends are joined at the reverse with hand stitching. This example shows honest age and character, with light patina and some subtle toning to the white fibers, as well as a few small areas of aging to the fabric. Importantly, the red and black colors remain vibrant and unfaded with no tears or rips. This armband is fitted with two snaps for attachment to a uniform, a detail which suggests it was worn on a tunic. Overall, this is a desirable and well-preserved example of an HJ Hitler Youth Armband, with condition rating as excellent.
Historical Description: Nearly every military, civil, political, and paramilitary organization in existence during the Third Reich used armbands. Armbands were worn on military and civilian uniforms and also on civilian clothes, from suit jackets to work clothing. They were used to denote membership in organizations, to indicate a specific role or function of the bearer, and as insignia of rank. Many organizations would change the design of their armbands over time, which added to the variety produced. These were manufactured in countless variations, ranging from simple printed bands to elaborately hand-embroidered pieces of the highest quality. Some Nazi armbands were worn by all members of large organizations and were made by the millions. Others were intended for use at a specific time and place and were unique. Many types were made in very limited numbers. Some bore metal insignia or special identifiers that indicated the wearer’s rank, unit affiliation, or nationality. Armbands were sometimes but not always marked with ink stamps by the issuing authorities.
