Product Description: For the discerning collector seeking a truly exceptional artifact, this original Allgemeine SS Officer Visor Cap represents a cornerstone piece seldom encountered on the open market. Offered on consignment and originally sourced from the collection of Billy Kramer, this visor embodies the elegance and precision characteristic of elite German officer headgear.
Crafted from high-quality black polished wool, the cap exudes the distinctive presence associated with SS officers. The black velvet centerband, reserved exclusively for officers, displays subtle evidence of age that only enhances its authenticity. The visor is properly marked “RZM SS” on the underside of the brim, with the original RZM label still intact beneath the sweatband, accompanied by the initials “WP.”
It is worth noting that the period original SS skull and eagle insignia were removed at some point in time and replaced with an early SA/SS skull and SA/NSDAP/SS eagle. The reasons for this substitution remain unknown; however, a knowledgeable collector could easily source and restore the appropriate insignia to return the cap to its original configuration.
The interior of the cap is lined in fine silk, with the celluloid diamond absent—an omission not uncommon given the fragility of these components. The remaining liner and sweatband are well-preserved, further testifying to the cap’s authenticity and rarity.
Allgemeine SS officer visor caps of this caliber are extraordinarily scarce. Many surviving examples exhibit extensive mothing, damaged interiors, or significant postwar alterations. This example, however, retains remarkable originality and integrity, making it an ideal acquisition for the advanced WWII collector or museum curator alike.
Opportunities to secure an Allgemeine SS officer’s visor in such condition are exceedingly rare. This is your chance to acquire a genuine and historically significant piece before it disappears into another advanced collection.
Historical Description: The visor cap (Schirmmütze) was an important part of the headgear worn by German uniformed military, civil, paramilitary and political organizations during the Third Reich. This was the standard cloth headgear worn as a part of the service uniform. Visor caps were worn outdoors, as well as indoors, and were often required to be worn by all personnel on duty. Visor caps were made in versions specific to each organization and were often further differentiated through the use of insignia, colored piping, or style of chin cord, to indicate rank, role or branch. The insignia used on these caps ranged from simple stamped metal emblems, to elaborate hand embroidery. Visor caps were issued to enlisted soldiers and NCOs in the military and in some other organizations. Officers had to purchase their own hats, and lower ranks could choose to purchase caps that were of a higher quality than the rather basic, issue examples. The private purchase caps were generally made in very high quality, with fine materials. A wide variety of fabrics were used, from Trikot and doeskin, to heavy wool, or even lightweight white fabric for summer wear. In the military, issue of these caps was generally suspended shortly after the outbreak of the war, but they continued to be worn by some troops until the end of the war.
