Product Description: This Luftwaffe Flak Badge is a superb example of a highly desirable variant, commonly referred to by collectors as the “Ball Hinge” type. Crafted from zinc, this piece boasts exceptional quality and detail. The obverse is particularly striking, retaining virtually all of its original dark factory finish. The high points exhibit a pleasing shine that contrasts beautifully with the deeper toned recesses, giving the badge an impressive depth and eye-catching appearance. The reverse is textbook for this variant, featuring a fully intact and functional ball hinge setup with a slightly bent attachment pin and a crimped sheet metal catch—hallmarks of this distinctive type. The reverse surface remains untouched, with no signs of cleaning or repair, and displays attractive, subtle rainbow toning and patina. Though the maker of this variant remains unidentified, it is well-documented and sought after. This Luftwaffe Flak Badge is in outstanding, excellent++ condition and would be a standout addition to any advanced collection. A truly difficult example to upgrade.

Historical Description: The Luftwaffe Flak Badge was instituted on 10th January 1941. The original design, an Eagle clutching a swastika flying above a raised 88mm gun emplacement and surrounded by an oakleaves wreath, is credited to Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus, a famous German architect whose designs were favored by the German OKW and used for many other combat and qualification awards. The criteria for the awarding of the Luftwaffe Flak Badge was based upon a points system. Points were given for the downing of enemy aircraft and the assistance of the downing of aircraft by searchlight or spotting units. After accruing 16 points, the badge would be awarded. Both officers and enlisted personnel were eligible for the award.
