Product Description: What an incredible Eickhorn Deluxe Hunting Cutlass, the quality on this piece is first class. The 10 inch blade is a deep black triple etched example. It is Eickhorn stamped to the reverse of course- exactly as it should be. The etching is in fine condition having highly detailed panels depicting stags, dogs, and foxes, in hunting settings. The top edge has a perfect oak-leaf motif. There is no sharpening. The factory green felt buffer is intact. For those of you who will ask me, indeed when I peek under the buffer the secret marking found on originals is there. I rate the blade near mint. The fittings are all silver washed with even and matching patina. Wonderful detail to the crossguard and clamshell with hand finished work to the detailed stag hooves. The stag grip is a multitude of colors from deep red to light yellow to black. It’s chip and crack free being embellished with the “DJ” shield. Pinned into the center of the antler grip is a National Hunting Association insignia. It consists of a stag head with a swastika superimposed over the cross which lies between the antlers. On either side of the deer’s head respectively, are the initials of the organization, “D.J.” The hand-enhanced pommel is perfectly fit to the horn and silver washed matching the hilt look at the detail! The very top fitting is secures the tang with a silver acorn. The scabbard has a fine pebbled green leather with 100% coverage. The dent-free matching silver washed fittings have scalloped edges where they meet the shell and are held intact by staples. Peek under the staples and you will see these are numbered, a feature we often see with 3rd Reich era pieces. The bottom is hand-decorated with a stag calling. The fitting are in excellent shape being dent free and with factory lacquer remaining! Look at the pommel ball, again wonderful detail. Finally finishing the piece is an original green frog that has always been on this. This Eickhorn Deluxe Hunting Cutlass was very desirable even in the period and the conditon is overall mint.

Historical Description: Hunting is a sport with a long tradition in Germany. As with any long tradition, it grew to become a practice steeped in ritual. Hunters generally were members of hunting clubs and organizations, which had permission to hunt specific state-owned forests, under the auspices of forestry organizations. Both the members of the hunting clubs, and those involved in forestry, had traditional hunting clothes, a sort of regalia that by the time of the Third Reich, had evolved into a uniform. These men carried traditional hunting cutlasses and daggers as part of their regalia. These was an almost infinite variety of these edged weapons, made by many makers, and available in countless styles to suit individual preferences. Some of these hunting cutlasses and daggers were mostly utilitarian and practical and were used for the final thrust at the close of a successful hunt. Others were ornate, with detailed ornamentation, and were used for formal and ceremonial occasions when the traditional regalia were worn. These edged weapons were expensive and very personal objects for their original owners.
