Product Description: 938 W The Prussian Golden Military Merit Cross was the highest bravery award of the Kingdom of Prussia for non-commissioned officers and enlisted soldiers. It is constructed out of a gilt alloy and is marked 938 and W (for Wagner) on the bottom arm, official WWI period issue cross. The obverse features a pattée style cross with a centrally placed royal monogram of Kaiser Wilhelm I as King of Prussia. The reverse reads “Kriegs Verdienst” above a laurel and berry cluster tied together with a ribbon.  The top features a soldered-on loop and ring which holds a standard 1914 EKII ribbon. This Golden Military Merit Cross is very rare to find and is in excellent plus condition.

Historical Description: The Military Merit Cross was founded by King Wilhelm I and it was conferred upon non-commissioned officers and enlisted men in recognition of acts of special merit and repeated bravery. This decoration was known as the “Pour le Mérite” for non-commissioned officers and enlisted men. The cross is also known as the Golden Military Merit Cross, in order to avoid confusing it with the Military Decoration 1st Class, a lesser Prussian decoration.
