Hitler Youth Sport Shirt – 2nd Pattern

Product Description: This Hitler Youth Sport Shirt is a very attractive and scarce piece of uniform. This example is the type known as the second pattern, with red stripes that encircle the shirt. The body of the shirt is made of a smooth knit material, probably a rayon blend. The red stripes are printed and retain good color. The front of the shirt is adorned with a Bevo style machine woven diamond swastika Hitlerjugend organizational emblem. This emblem is made of rayon and is affixed directly to the front of the shirt with factory style straight machine stitching in white thread. The inside rear neck area of the shirt has an attractive Bevo woven factory tag that reads “ReSo Beste Sportkleidung Zweifadig Ges Gesch” as well as a separate size tag with the woven red numeral “4.” The lower edge of the shirt has a complete and very well-preserved oilcloth RZM tag that reads “HJ. u. DJ.-Sporthemd.” The tag has the typical RZM emblem and serial number, and the stamped maker code of “B19/228” is still legible. This shirt shows traces of age and wear, with some stains to the front and the back, but no holes or other damage of note. Overall, the condition of this well-marked and desirable Hitler Youth Sport Shirt rates as excellent.

Historical Description: Physical fitness and competition were two concepts that were highly valued in the ideology of the Third Reich. All kinds of sports clubs and organizations flourished in the years before WWII, with larger Reich level organizations supervising athletics, promoting events and issuing awards for sport achievement. The various Nazi era civil, political, military and paramilitary organizations also promoted or even mandated exercise and sports for their members. To facilitate this, these organizations instituted sport uniforms, which typically included sport shoes, and for warm weather, shorts and a knit tank top with a woven emblem specific to that organization. In cold weather, the sport uniform generally included dark colored knit trousers and a sweatshirt, usually also with the sports-specific organizational emblem. The woven organizational emblem patch used on the sports patch was often a rather large patch, making these appealing souvenirs for Allied troops as they swept into Germany. Some types of the sports patches are very common today, though intact sports clothing is rarer, and some sports emblems for smaller organizations, made in limited numbers, are very rare.
