Product Description: This set of Reichsmarine Grossadmiral Shoulder Boards is an extremely well-preserved example of a truly rare piece of German Navy regalia. These were intended for wear by officers with the rank of Grand Admiral, the highest rank in the German Imperial Navy. Few of these sets for this supreme high rank were ever produced. This set displays exceptionally well. The high quality gold bullion braid and silver tress are in excellent to near mint condition. Each board is adorned with a very nice silvered imperial eagle and Prussian crown. These metal devices show exquisite detail and minimal age toning, with virtually no wear. The gilt Naval buttons are intact, and the blue wool underlay shows no mothing or damage, with the bold blue color still strong after over 100 years. This set of Reichsmarine Grossadmiral Shoulder Boards is complete with the original case. The exterior of the case shows fading and some discoloration from protecting the boards inside over many decades. It shows light wear. Inside, the padded interior topper is intact, with expected age toning. This is an extremely rare set. The condition rates as excellent.

Historical Description: The German military as well as civil, political and paramilitary organizations traditionally used shoulder straps and shoulder boards as uniform insignia, to denote the rank or function of the wearer. After the Nazi rise to power in 1933, there was a tremendous increase in the number of groups and organizations in Germany wearing officially sanctioned uniforms, and most of these organizations used shoulder straps and shoulder boards as a component of their regalia. The exact color of piping utilized, the material color, the type of braid or Tresse that was used, and the number or location of devices and pips present, allow shoulder boards to be tracked to the exact organization that issued them, and often yield even further detail such as the wearer’s rank and even his specific military unit. Normally worn in pairs, the boards were in some cases plain, and in other cases adorned with detailed embroidery or metal emblems. Some shoulder boards were made in the millions, others were specific to a single individual.
