Product Description: This is a great example of the scarce and desirable Leaders Dagger for Red Cross. The blade is beautiful, with full original luster, and only typical light runner marks. The handle features a beautiful, orange grip, with no cracks or chips. The metal fittings on the handle have only very light age toning, and the eagle and swastika Red Cross organizational emblem on the crossguard has great detail. The original leather buffer is present on the blade. This Leaders Dagger for Red Cross is complete with its original scabbard, which retains nearly all of its original plated finish. The scabbard is nice and straight, and shows only minor wear. There is no indication that this piece has ever been disassembled or tampered with in any way. This Leaders Dagger for Red Cross is in overall excellent condition and displays very handsomely, with lots of eye appeal.
Historical Description: As with all civil, political and paramilitary organizations during the Third Reich, the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross) had uniforms and regalia for formal and ceremonial wear. The first formal uniforms for the DRK were introduced in 1935, and in 1938, new formal edged weapons were introduced, including the Red Cross Leaders Dagger, which was intended for wear by officials with the rank of Wachtführer (an NCO in charge of a guard) and above. The Geneva Convention stipulated that medical personnel could not be armed, so the Leaders Dagger was not intended to be functional, but rather purely ceremonial. Production of these Red Cross leaders daggers ceased in 1940, and the short production run, coupled with the relatively small size of the organization, resulted in relatively few of these daggers being produced. As a result, they are rare today, and very sought after by collectors.
