Product Description: This is a textbook example of a late war produced Luftwaffe Flak Badge manufactured by the firm, of Gustav Brehmer, in Markneukirchen. It is made of zinc as is typical for combat awards manufactured in this period. There is no maker mark. The original silver finish has become thin over the decades, revealing the gray color of the base metal. The front of the badge shows light wear, but retains great detail. There is some built-up age patina in the low spots. The back of the badge has a matching patina and retains a little more original finish. The typical Brehmer hardware is completely intact with no repairs. There is minor corrosion to the pin, which also has a bend, likely a result of having been removed from a uniform. This Luftwaffe Flak Badge has a great overall look and would be a fantastic addition to a field-worn uniform. It’s a very nice, representative example of a late war produced badge.

Historical Description: The Luftwaffe Flak Badge was instituted on 10th January, 1941. The original design, an Eagle clutching a swastika flying above a raised 88mm gun emplacement and surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves, is credited to Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus, a famous German architect whose designs were favored by the German OKW and used for many other combat and qualification awards. The criteria for the awarding of the Luftwaffe Flak Badge was based upon a points system. Points were given for the downing of enemy aircraft and the assistance of the downing of aircraft by searchlight or spotting units. After accruing 16 points, the badge would be awarded. Both officers and enlisted personnel were eligible for the award.
