Product Description: This Heer Panzer NCO Visor Cap is a beautiful example of a high quality, private purchase, tailor made cap. The body of this handsome cap is made of a fairly coarse Tricot weave wool. The wool is a typical field gray shade, and shows only a few small areas of moth tracking, with no significant damage to note. The piping is also wool, and is an eye-catching pink color indicating the desirable Panzer service branch. The piping retains bright original color, and shows just a few scattered moth nips. The cap band is an appealing dark green badge cloth, with just a few very minor moth nips under the folds. This attractive cap sports a complete set of Heer insignia. The eagle and wreath are both made of zinc, with nicely matching, uncleaned, original patina. The leather chin strap is complete, and the visor shows nice original shine. Inside, this Heer Panzer NCO Visor Cap is lined with cream colored, silk-like fabric. The interior shows honest wear and age patina throughout. The leather sweatband is intact, with no damage. Most of the celluloid sweatshield is gone, though a portion remains, and covers a size tag indicating size 56. The logo in the top is a generic “Deutsche Wertarbeit” emblem. This is a choice cap, with a desirable “saddle” shape, and just the right amount of wear to give it a unique and charming character. The condition rates as excellent.

Historical Description: The visor cap (Schirmmütze) was an important part of the headgear worn by German uniformed military, civil, paramilitary and political organizations during the Third Reich. This was the standard cloth headgear worn as a part of the service uniform. Visor caps were worn outdoors, as well as indoors, and were often required to be worn by all personnel on duty. Visor caps were made in versions specific to each organization and were often further differentiated through the use of insignia, colored piping, or style of chin cord, to indicate rank, role or branch. The insignia used on these caps ranged from simple stamped metal emblems, to elaborate hand embroidery. Visor caps were issued to enlisted soldiers and NCOs in the military and in some other organizations. Officers had to purchase their own hats, and lower ranks could choose to purchase caps that were of a higher quality than the rather basic, issue examples. The private purchase caps were generally made in very high quality, with fine materials. A wide variety of fabrics were used, from Trikot and doeskin, to heavy wool, or even lightweight white fabric for summer wear. In the military, issue of these caps was generally suspended shortly after the outbreak of the war, but they continued to be worn by some troops until the end of the war.
