Product Description: This NSDAP Amtswalter Sleeve Diamond is a scarce and attractive piece of insignia for a Nazi Party political leader. This pattern of sleeve shield was worn by NSDAP Political Leaders holding the position of “Amtswalter” (an Administrator, official, or local-party-boss). It was worn on the upper left sleeve of the brown political NSDAP tunic. This sleeve shield measures about 78mm tall by 65mm wide. It is in the form of a diamond, made of thin black rayon fabric. The center of the diamond features a 1929 pattern NSDAP style German eagle and swastika emblem, which is Bevo style, machine woven, in silver-grey thread with a black swastika and red tongue on the eagle. This rayon diamond has been folded around a textbook original tan buckram backing, which has a small hole that is visible on the rear in the center. This NSDAP Amtswalter appears to have been removed from a uniform, and shows light, even wear. A few traces of the original black stitching used to affix this to a uniform sleeve remain intact. Overall, this sleeve shield rates as excellent condition.
Historical Description: Adolf Hitler was an army veteran in 1919. Frustrated by Germany’s defeat in World War I, he joined a new political organization called the German Workers’ Party. The organization was founded earlier that same year and promoted German nationalism. Members of this organization felt that the Treaty of Versailles was extremely unjust to Germany, by burdening it with reparations it could never pay. Hitler became the leader of this party in 1921 and changed the name to The National Socialist German Workers’ Party; Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP). In 1933, Hitler became chancellor of Germany and his Nazi government soon assumed dictatorial powers. After Germany’s defeat in World War II the Nazi party was outlawed.
