Product Description: This Sonderklasse Allgemeine SS NCO Visor has a very appealing look. The body of the cap is made from a wool fabric with a distinct diagonal twill weave. The white wool piping contrasts nicely with the strong original black color. The exterior of this cap shows light wear, with a pleasant, even patina, and no damage to note. The eagle and skull on this cap is a nice original, a desirable CupAl (copper and aluminum mechanical alloy). The skull is is made made by Deschler. The silver electroplated finish on the skull shows dark age toning, and is worn, revealing the copper beneath. The patent leather chin strap is the correct SS style, and is intact; the patent leather visor is still nice and glossy. Inside, this Sonderklasse Allgemeine SS NCO Visor still retains its original SS RZM cloth tag. This black RZM tag is stamped with the maker code “143,” for Müller. The underside of the visor bears the expected SS ink stamp, and the rayon lining has a large and attractive SS runic emblem under the celluloid sweatshield, with some age and wear evident. The leather sweatband is intact, and is stamped on the underside with “K.L. – 38” likely indicating manufacture in 1938. There is some light staining to the rayon lining in the interior, but no major damage. The black Allgemeine-SS visors are extremely desirable, and are iconic pieces of prewar SS regalia. This one is in excellent condition.
Historical Description: The visor cap (Schirmmütze) was an important part of the headgear worn by German uniformed military, civil, paramilitary and political organizations during the Third Reich. This was the standard cloth headgear worn as a part of the service uniform. Visor caps were worn outdoors, as well as indoors, and were often required to be worn by all personnel on duty. Visor caps were made in versions specific to each organization and were often further differentiated through the use of insignia, colored piping, or style of chin cord, to indicate rank, role or branch. The insignia used on these caps ranged from simple stamped metal emblems, to elaborate hand embroidery. Visor caps were issued to enlisted soldiers and NCOs in the military and in some other organizations. Officers had to purchase their own hats, and lower ranks could choose to purchase caps that were of a higher quality than the rather basic, issue examples. The private purchase caps were generally made in very high quality, with fine materials. A wide variety of fabrics were used, from Trikot and doeskin, to heavy wool, or even lightweight white fabric for summer wear. In the military, issue of these caps was generally suspended shortly after the outbreak of the war, but they continued to be worn by some troops until the end of the war.
